Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGD)
What Are They?
A livestock guardian dog (LGD) is a dog bred for the purpose of protecting livestock from predators. They live with and consider themselves as a member of the flock or herd. They don't move a herd, instead, they blend in with the herd and watch for the presence of intruders. They will confront intruders with vocal intimidation, barking, and aggressive behavior. They will attack if they can't drive the predator away.

Puppies should be introduced to the animals they are to protect at a very young age. They need to be watched and taught correct actions toward the animals they are guarding. Some is instinctual, but they need to learn manners from humans or an older dog. They are not fully developed and dependable until they are two years old, so you need to be patient with them and give them time to learn. Having an older, well trained dog teach a young pup is a big positive in handling these dogs!

LGDs tend to work cooperatively, as a group taking on various roles within the group. A good dog will be trustworthy, attentive, and protective. They stay with their charges; they are not aggressive towards them; they are ever vigilant (even when they are resting); and they will drive away anything that is a threat. Some will patrol the edge of the flock or the boundaries of the property, keeping would be predators at a safe distance.

These dogs are usually large (100 lbs or over), independent, and protective. As such, they have a mind of their own, can be stubborn, and need a strong hand to guide them. They are gentle giants and can be taught to protect anything, including children if introduced to a family as a pup. They will be as protective to their family as to their flock.

Let us introduce you to our family. They guard chickens and goats. Bailey has been the momma to all our pups so far. Max is our male and the daddy of our pups.

Max
Born 10/26/19
3/4 Akbash, 1/8 Pyrenees, 1/8 Maremma

Bailey
Born 5/7/19

Great Pyrenees

She is sweet and loving, great with the animals, and a great momma to her pups and trainer to Indy. She is vigilant about patrolling the property and quick to act on anything out of the ordinary. She weighs about 85 pounds.

Indy
Born 10/10/20

9/16 Great Pyrenees, 3/8 Akbash, 1/16 Maremma

Trained by Bailey and Max, she is a vigilant protector and a lovable sweetheart. She loves to play, but she loves to work as well. She has Max's height and Bailey's girth. She is a big (over 100 pounds), beautiful puppy who loved her little siblings.

Sneakers
Born 2/1/22

9/16 Great Pyrenees, 3/8 Akbash, 1/16 Maremma

Sneakers came from the last litter of Bailey and Max. She was the second born with 4 white shoes (hence the name Sneakers) and the most curious as a newborn. As she grew, she adopted us. She was always at our heels and followed us everywhere. As she grew she dwarfed both her mother and her sister, Indy. She is about 120 lbs. She has learned from momma and sister and sounds ferocious as she protects her charges (chickens and goats) and her borders.

Indy
She was the first born of the litter. Named for her adventurous nature and "nothing can stop me" attitude, she stole our hearts, and her home is here with us. 70 lbs at 6 months.

Teddy (Bear)
Hera (Off)
Off and Bear
Now known as Hera and Teddy found their new home in Colorado. "Off" was so named because she was just a little off white, and she was every bit as spunky as her sister. "Bear" just looked like a teddy bear and was about as cuddly as one too.

Nudge

Now known as Brody found his new home in Moriarty, NM. You could always find him in the middle of any fray. 80 pounds at 6 months.
Barley
(Brody's friend)

Spence
Now known as Kylo found his new home in Edgewood, NM. Probably the biggest of the pups with a big heart to match. Kylo (Spence) meets his new family.

Spot
Now known as Gus found his new home in Corrales, NM. He is a sweetheart. He was the smallest male but has a big personality. 90 pounds at 6 months.
